In a very real sense, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Typically you are taught a cue to enter this very pleasant state by a hypnotist. It might be an image or a word that you use to focus yourself to begin the relaxation process. In a sense you are altering your internal world. When you can visualize and imagine how you want things to be, your feelings and behavior will begin to change. Hypnosis is a focused state of attention and concentration that allows you to use more of that potential and power of your own mind. Individuals vary in their hypnotic talents but most people can relax to some degree. You simply allow things to happen and not try to force experiences.
Once you have been taught a cue to enter an hypnotic state, there are some things you need to do in order to ensure a good experience.
- Create a favorable environment such as a quiet comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed by people or pets. A comfortable reclining chair and dark space are recommended.
- Schedule practice time. Setting aside regular time for self hypnosis is highly recommended. Establish the habit of using it daily. You have to make an effort and commitment to use hypnosis regularly for it to take effect.
- Write down your goals. It is usually more valuable to think specifically about what behaviors need to change and what new feelings you want to have.
- Prepare hypnotic suggestions ahead of time. They should be positive and simple. You will avoid words such as don’t, won’t, shouldn’t, etc.
- Be flexible regarding time. Do not expect instant change.
- Be specific in phrasing suggestions. Consider exactly how you want to feel and act in specific situations.
- Determine a posthypnotic suggestion for feelings or actions that you want to occur after you alert yourself from hypnosis.
- Keep your suggestions relatively brief and use repetition.
These are just a few of the items to consider when you practice self hypnosis. Your hypnotist can help you with these suggestions and others to make your self hypnosis experience a successful one.
