Some Quick Tips For Managing Anxiety

Sometimes anxiety gets the best of us even for therapists such as myself. What can you do the next time anxiety gets the best of you? Consider the following:

Reframe it. Consider what the anxiety is trying to tell you. Make contact with the discomfort. Is there a message to the anxiety? Perhaps it is telling you to open the bills or get a good night’s sleep.

Lean into it. We naturally try to fight off anxiety so instead, stand up, open your arms wide, and open yourself to the sensation of the emotion. This unguarded posture tricks your brain into thinking there is no threat, so the anxiety soon dissapates.

Get to work. If what’s upsetting you is unfinished tasks, take some action-no matter how small-toward accomplishing something.

Take comfort. Take a walk, spend time with a friend or partner. Don’t try to run from your anxiety. Your mentality should be, I can handle this anxiety. I choose to engage in some form of self care. However self medicating through drugs or alcohol is never wise.

With these steps you can say “bring it on!” and be ready for the next time you are feeling overwhelmed by life and anxiety.
