Did you know that hypnosis can help with panic attacks? The process includes relaxing while you are in the middle of a panic attack; stopping the thoughts that produced the panic attack; replacing catastrophic thoughts with positive coping statements, and allowing yourself to feel and accept all the physical sensations that accompany the attack.
Usually the relaxation part of hypnosis will include deep breathing and scanning your body for any signs of tension and stress and then learning how to tense and relax those areas several times. The thought stopping portion of hypnosis will teach you how to control catastrophic; panic-perpetuating thoughts. The third part of the induction into hypnosis will reinforce your ability to compose and use positive, factual self-statements which are new responses to fear. The therapist can help you compose these statements before the hypnosis session. The final part of the hypnosis induction and suggestions includes accepting your feelings knowing that they are temporary and will pass. This final step in the induction process will help you cope with the flight or fight discomfort.
The hypnotist should be able to tell in the first session whether or not you would be a good candidate for hypnosis as a tool to cope with anxious thoughts and feelings that contribute to panic attacks.
