Bad Body Language Can Undermine A Job Interview

You can say all the right things in an interview but your body language speaks volumes about you and can actually derail what seems like a good interview. What are some smart body language strategies for your interview?

  1. Move decisively as the interview begins. First impressions are lasting impressions, so a momentary uncertainty could damage your chance of landing the job before the interview even begins. This includes actions like intiating a firm handshake and using a solid strong voice. Move with confidence and purpose from the moment you arrive at the company’s premises.
  2. Make hand gestures with open palms at navel height. Hand gestures below navel height seem disengaged and passionless.
  3. Sit up not forward or back in your chair and, position the chair properly. Learn what is the smart way to position your chair whether you are at a table or a desk or if there is nothing between you and the interviewer.
  4. Weed out nervous ticks and things that look like nervous tics. Usually anything you can do to calm yourself should help cut down on these behaviors.
  5. Make extended eye contact. There is no such thing as too much eye contact. Do not pair this with agggressive body language.
  6. If you write something down during the interview, explain why you are writing otherwise you may make the interviewer uncomfortable however do not hold a pen and pad throughout the interview which can make you seem less effective at being in control of your own thoughts.
  7. Send a strong parting message. Be on the lookout for signs that the inteview is over. Do not check the time. Some inteviewers give more subtle signals that the interview is over and become frustrated when these are not heeded. If you suspect the interview is over, ask the interveiewer if there is anything else you can provide them.
  8. Above all, appear confident and relaxed.
