One of the things that I like to do with a client is to establish an anchor during the hypnosis session. I often ask clients to bring something of importance to them when they come to see me. It could be a small object of some kind such as a piece of jewelry or small art object or a special pebble; anything that has meaning to them. If the client cannot think or locate something of value, then I will use their fingers in an OK sign or their clenched fist. I anchor this to a specific feeling I want the client to have such as confidence, happiness, calmness or spontaneity. This connection is made during the hypnosis session when the nonconscious mind is available for suggestions.
By connecting the anchor with a specific feeling in hypnosis, all the client has to do when needing to feel a certain way or avoiding/ending unwanted feelings or desires is to “fire” this anchor which allows the client to have the power to resist a negative behavior, thought, or feeling.
Anchors work very well with coping with anxiety, anger, cravings such as food or alcohol, nailbiting, and negative thoughts.
