Answering the above question really depends on the music, what you are doing, and how distractible you are. In a recent journal study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology participants were asked to perform a complex task (pairing words) and scored about 4% worse when they listened to music of any kind compared to doing the same task in silence. But when performing a simple task such as crossing words off a list, they performed 7% better when listening to complex music versus listening to simpler music or no music.
Possible reason: The brain has additional resources available when performing a simple task, so music helps the brain to focus. Note: People prone to distraction because they are bored tend to perform worse on any kind of task when listening to music.
Just some notes to ponder if you listen to music as you perform simple or complex tasks.
