A few more strategies for overcoming anxiety related to feelings of being an imposter:
6. Share Your Failures: Hearing what other people say about you isn’t the only way to grow out of the imposter phenomenon. Sometimes discussing failures can help paint a more realistic portrait of what other people are struggling with. Seeing your worst and someone else’s best can spark comparison which can aggravate imposter feelings. Sharing your failures in a group can result in learning that many others have also experienced the same disappointment and that these failures happen to every single person even if they are at the top of their field.
7. Accept It: As you learn to work through imposter phenomenon, it will probably interfere less with your well-being. However taming these feelings does not mean they will never show up again. It’s possible for them to arise with career shifts like promotions where everyone has been at the top of their game for years so competition can become fierce. Often when we are faced with new experiences or roles, the imposter feelings can reemerge. It’s good to recognize that even if you are making progress, these feelings may arise again.
If you are experiencing these imposter feelings, life coaching may be helpful. Also hypnosis has been shown to mitigate these feelings as you change perceptions of yourself.
