The Four Agreements

In his most famous book, The Four Agreements, published in 1997, Don Miguel Ruiz advocates personal freedom from beliefs and agreements that we have made with ourselves and others that create unhappiness in our lives.

They are:

  1. Be impeccable with your word.
  2. Don’t take anything personally.
  3. Don’t make assumptions.
  4. Always do your best.

These refer to speaking with integrity with saying only what you mean without spreading gossip. The second refers to “nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.” “Learn to be immune to the opinion of others so that you don’t suffer needlessly.” Also find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really mean by communicating with others in a clear, void of drama manner. In addition by doing your best you avoid self judgement and regret.

Subsequently his son, Don Jose Ruiz, added a fifth agreement of being skeptical but learn to listen. In other words, don’t take to heart what someone says but listen to the message as there may be a kernel of truth in it.

If you find that you have difficulty with any of these, it may be due to low self esteem and the desire to please others. Both hypnosis and coaching can help you with esteem and confidence issues.
