Stages of Change

A Life Coach can help you through what theorists call the six transformational stages of change. These stages of change are supported by science and are widely accepted by Psychologists and other agents of change. A Life Coach can help you identify which stage of change you are in currently and guide you through the remaining stages in order to reach your goal or goals.

What are these stages?

  1. Precontemplation: You don’t even know that you want to change, but you know something isn’t right, such as always feeling tired or bored.
  2. Contemplation: You’re thinking about change but haven’t made a commitment to act and are researching pathways to change-such as seeing a life coach.
  3. Preparation: You decide to act, and you gather information and plan. Most people skip this stage when they try to make changes on their own-often leading to failure after a few weeks.
  4. Action: you begin to change your behavior and lifestyle.
  5. Maintenance: You’ve sustained the change for at least six months.
  6. Termination: The change is permanent. you’re no longer tempted by your former behavior.

Example: You contemplate that you need to change jobs/careers; you prepare by gathering information about possible career paths and the education needed to pursue those paths; you begin to act on that information by seeking additional training or by contacting people in that field for information; you pursue that education or training for at least six months and apply for the position; once in that position for six months you are no longer contemplating a change at this point.

These stages apply to all decisions regarding behavior change. A Life Coach can help you identify the stage you are in and then guide you through the remaining stages of change. Hypnosis is also a great tool for addressing these changes and moving through the stages.
