Signs of Burnout

Burn Out is a common feeling that occurs during stressful times such as what we are going through in this pandemic. I will list some of the signs and then talk about strategies to combat burnout in another post.

Here are the most common signs:

Alienation from work related activities such as seeing one’s job as increasingly stressful and frustrating. You may be cynical about your working conditions and the people you work with. You may begin to emotionally distance yourself from others and feel numb in terms of work.

Physical symptoms which can include headaches, stomach aches and other intestinal issues.

Emotional exhaustion where you feel drained, unable to cope, and tired. Energy feels in short supply and it is hard to get your work done.

Reduced performance which focuses on everyday tasks at work or home where you begin to feel negative about these tasks. You may have difficulty concentrating and feel a lack of creativity.

Burnout shares many symptoms with depression but depression also includes a loss of interest in things, feelings of hopelessness, and thoughts of suicide. Burnout is not a psychological illness and is not mentally diagnosed but can create a loss of drive, unhappiness, and frustration with everyday tasks at work and home.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list nor a treatment for depression. If you feel depressed, please see a mental health counselor or call NAMI at 800-950-6264. If this is an emergency call 911 or 1-800-273-8255.

In a future blog, I will talk about some of the treatments for burnout. As always, if you think I can help, do not hesitate to call me at 361-442-9590 or email me at holtadams2002@yahoo.com. My physical office remains closed and at this time, I have no plans to reopen that space until it is safe to see clients in my office.
